La Oroya is an industrial town high in the mountains east of Lima. It is the metallurgical capital of Peru with iron ore in the surroundings and large metal smelters around the city. Therefore it is not an attractive city for tourists, but it is an important crossing of roads and many travellers stop here for the night. The railroad from Lima to Huancayo, the highest in the world, also crosses La Oroya.
