The Osprey is Nova Scotia's provincial bird. It lives in Nova Scotia in the spring and summer and goes south to the United States for the fall and winter. |

Nova Scotia's tree symbol is the Red Spruce. It is a strong tree that can grow in all types of soil. It stands for the strength of the people of Nova Scotia and has played a huge part in their history from being used to build ships and save men from scurvy to now being sold as lumber. |

Nova Scotia's coat of arms has the same symbol in the middle that is on the flag with the Scottish Cross of St. Andrews. The Native warrior stands for the Aboriginal People of Nova Scotia and the unicorn and the thistle above are both symbols of Scotland. The laurel leaf beside the thistle is the laurel leaf of peace and there is an armored hand shaking hands with the hand of protection. The motto, "mumit haec et altera vincit" means "One defends and the other conquers". |
