BRITISH COLUMBIA

British Columbia is on the west coast of Canada beside the Pacific Ocean. Above British Columbia are the Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories. Alaska, which is part of the United States also lies above British Columbia. Below B.C. are the states: Washington, Idaho and Montanta.

The capital city of British Columbia is Victoria.

At the top of the flag of British Columbia there is the Union Jack which is the United Kingdom's flag. This shows our unity with Britain. Underneath this is the setting sun which shows that we are on the Western (left) side of Canada where the sun sets. The wavy blue lines stand for the sea and our maritime strength.

British Columbia's flower is the dogwood. The flowers grow on a Pacific Dogwood tree and they bloom in April and May.

The Provincial bird is the Steller's Jay. This beautiful blue/ black bird was voted the most popular bird in British Columbia (http://www.gov.bc.ca/bcfacts/)

British Columbia's tree is the Western Red Cedar, a tree called the "Cornerstone of West Coast Aboriginal People" because of the many uses that they found for it.

Blue stands for the ocean.
White stands for the dogwood flower.
Green stands for the forests.
Red stands for the Maple Leaf.
Gold stands for the crown and sun which are on the shield and the flag.
